Dry Eye Disease
Dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) is when there is a lack of natural tears and lubrication for the eye surface. Symptoms include red eyes, foreign body sensation (the feeling of something in the eye), burning sensation, blurry or double vision, itching, and tired or heavy feeling eyes. Some people even have watery and tearing eyes, a phenomenon called 'reflexive tearing'. This happens because when the eye is irritated, it will naturally produce tears to try and soothe the eye but these type of tears do not actually lubricate the eye.
There are a multitude of different reasons for dry eyes, including contact lens use, previous eye surgery including LASIK, medications, medical diseases such as lupus, allergies and many more. In addition, your tears are composed of three different layers and different types of dry eyes may affect a different tear layer. Because of this, dry eye treatment is not as simple as prescribing artificial tears.
